25/05/10 part 1

Well, we didn’t get attacked by wolves or bears in the night, but we did have an encounter with the most dangerous creature of them all: Man. At about midnight a quad bike pulled up by our van and the two guys on it were shouting something, one actually came up and smacked the rear window of the van before getting back on the quad and riding off. We inside had quickly got up and thrown on some clothes expecting some form of confrontation, but luckily none came.

In the morning we didn’t hang about too long and went down into the park. After visiting the tourist info centre and booking our camp ground for the night we went off to explore the hydrothermal aspects of the park. We briefly visited Buffalo Springs as it was where we entered the park before heading down towards Old Faithful. The park is really quite big; the drive to Old Faithful was about 50 miles. On the way we stopped at a large geyser basin that was home to the largest geyser in the park. Unfortunately although big, that geyser is unpredictable and it can be years between eruptions. The geyser basin was a bizarre place, it smelled strongly of sulphur and had lots of small colourful pools, steam vents and bubbling craters. As a whole, it isn’t really “beautiful” as a forest covered valley is, but it is truly spectacle like nothing I have ever experienced before. It almost seems out of place in the world, yet it is actually a rare place where you can catch a glimpse of the inner working of the world.

We have hot some wifi before I can finish this post, there will be more to come.
