(reporting on the 8th)

Our first experience of San Diego was on the night of the 5th, where we pulled up at a Wal-Mart, grabbed some food and when we got back to the car we decided to pop back and use the bathroom to find that it had shut. We wandered around the town of Lemon Grove for ages trying to find a bathroom. Everything shut at 10pm! Even in little towns in the desert the Wal-Mart and McDonalds' stayed open later than that! We eventually found a Taco Bell that was open until 11pm and just managed to get in before it too shut.

In the morning we went down to the “trolley” station. The trolleys are the tram system for the city. It was a really nice system, not as large and intricate as London Underground or the New York Subway, but the trams were clean, comfortable and regular, furthermore a day pass for the whole lot is $5 and parking is free. The city was nice, although the GPS signal was terrible so caching was troublesome in the actual city. We had a wander round the downtown area and the gaslamp district before heading up to the old town for lunch. The old town was a reconstruction of how the old town used to be hundreds of years ago, so was everything you expect from a western film :)

Over lunch I happened to look at the nearby caching situation and stumbled upon a perfect line of caches on beeline. It was a power series. 40 caches, each about 100m apart. A caching opportunity like that cannot be turned down. The series followed a river just north of the old town. The area was a nature reserve so there were loads of nice birds etc and the weather was fantastic, blue sky, sunshine and a nice breeze so it wasn't too hot. When we got to our start point it was 3pm and we managed to get the 40 caches by dark, pretty good I recon. In the end we got 43 in the day, which is a new personal best and a good chunk towards my 1000.
