A cold night, coldest so far. Fortunately my sleeping bag is really warm, so the only part of me that felt the cold was my nose. When we got up in the morning the thermometer said 5 degrees, so was probably colder during the night.
We awoke fairly early so we could go for a day hike in the canyon. We head off down the Kaibab Trail, which, according to the girl at the info centre, is the best trail for a day hike as the scenery is more varied. Yes the scenery did vary, but it was all amazing. The trail was pretty steep form the start, which is fine when you are going down, coming back up is somewhat more tiring. The trail head is at 7300ft above sea level, and we walked down to the edge of the plateau at 3600ft where we had lunch before heading back up. It was a fantastic day for the hike, blue skies and sunshine. It got pretty hot in the sun, but the temperature in the shade was only just in double figures, so a strange contrast. Walking in the canyon is one of the top things to do in America according to my guide book, and for good reason. It is spectacular, no photos will ever do it justice, and a walk really puts you right in the heart of the scene. It is probably a place that I could come back and spend a week or more walking and camping around the national park, not for this trip, but some day.
After the walk we had a well earned late lunch of beans and bagels before doing the more mundane but necessary task of laundry and showering. Cleaning of clothes and self is a bit of a luxury here, so when we get the chance we have to take it. For dinner we went to the crazily overpriced store and got some firewood and burgers and I purchased some Grand Canyon Brewing Company beer, couldn’t resist it :). Fire and camping, great, made some great burgers too (reviews coming soon).
Right, wifi time. I’ll cut this one short and update it if I get a moment later.
Cube out.
