The Double Down – Review

Last night we stopped off at a KFC for some food, although this one was actually called a Kentucky Grilled Chicken, not sure if that makes any difference or its just a way of sounding less unhealthy. At KGC we both had the “Double Down” sandwich and this is a brief account of my opinions.

Packaging:

A box. On a tray. Standard fast food. The box contained the sandwich itself inside a grease proof paper pocket, which is a good thing considering the nature of the sandwich (which I shall get to shortly). Although good for stopping your hands getting so greasy, grease proof paper is not good at insulating heat, so I almost burned my hands trying to pick the sucker up. Fortunately napkins were at hand to help on that front.

The Sandwich:

The term “sandwich” in this case is somewhat misleading seeing as there is no bread or bun to speak of. The “sandwich” consists of bacon and cheese sandwiched between two KFC chicken breasts.

If you have had KFC before I'm sure you can imagine what this would taste like. One one hand it tastes great, that combination of fat and salt that the body seems to crave. On the other hand it is a catastrophe. So much grease. Egad. The grease proof paper really is a necessity here. The thing drips grease. In a burger/sandwich/meal of any kind, a balance is needed for it to be truly nice. In a sandwich there needs to be a good balance between filling and bread, too much of one and it is just not a great sandwich. Just as a roast dinner consisting of just meat and gravy would seem like a fantastic idea, the veg and potatoes add to the taste and make the meat and gravy special. Thus the Double Down is one of those things that sounds like a great idea, but results vary on the day.

Concluding Thoughts:

During the consumption the “sandwich” tasted good, incredibly more-ish and zingy from the spices and the salt, but once you stop and look at the drips of fat and cheese left in the grease proof paper and box you realise this is a monster. After eating this thing I felt pretty greasy and horrible, furthermore I felt like I had assaulted my poor body. I get the feeling that this will be a hit for some,  but for me it was over the top and left me wanting a salad.

In a Word:

Greasetastic.

Cube out.
