02/06/10

We set off bright and early towards Sudbury as Tomtom said that it would be a good 5 hour drive, but actually it was quite a bit less due to a nice big new road that was not on the map. So we rolled up at my aunt and uncle's house nicely before lunch. We had lunch with my aunt Margy and cousin Brittany, a lunch that included vegetables! It has been so long since I have had vegetables, I have been able to get fruit most of the way on the trip, but veg is now a real treat.

After lunch and after taking advantage of a chance to call home we set off with Margy to check out the town and grab a couple of caches. It is always nice to go round a town with someone who lives there and knows it well. For those of you who don't know, Sudbury is a town famous for it's huge nickel mine and is sometimes referred to as the “big nickel” and actually has a big model of a nickel by the museum. For physicists the town is famous for the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, SNO. The SNO detector played a pivotal role neutrino physics and particle physics in general. It pretty much single handedly solved the solar neutrino problem and gave undeniable evidence for neutrino oscillation. I will not go into the physics here but feel free to look it up on wikipedia. Unfortunately as this is down in the mines and is a working scientific experiment, it is not open to the public. We did get a few caches and introduced Margy to geocaching, another Goldsborough may well be joining the fold :)

In the evening I had my first experience of New Super Mario Bros Wii and it is awesome. The much touted multi player aspect is pretty annoying though and to me just gets in the way of the single player game. For the remainder of the evening we just relaxed and went through some of our photos on my uncle's epic home cinema system.
